Cornwall Weekend (25-28 Jun 2004)

What a great weekend this was! While billed as a West London event, in the end we had 2 cars from North Thames, 1 from South Central and 3 from West London.

Tim had booked some of us into a great B&B at a farmhouse just outside of St Austell. We arrived early in the afternoon and were treated to a fantastic cream tea. After relaxing for a while we made the trip into Fowey and spent the afternoon and evening looking around the pretty town and having dinner.

On Saturday we spent the day at the Eden Project, protected from the rain inside the Biomes. The structures are amazing, as are some of the plants and displays. It was certainly well worth the trip.

The weather improved for Sunday, which was fortunate as the Cornwall area had organised a day's drive for us via Lands End. The route was stunning, taking us along the south and north coasts through such places as St Mawes. The convoy (now including 6 Cornwall cars) looked brilliant and got plenty of attention from passers by as we wound our way through the narrow, twisting Cornish roads. There was a brief stop for the King Harry ferry at Feock which amazingly we all fitted onto in one crossing. After almost 3 hours of driving I was glad when we reached our pub lunch stop at the Trevalyan Arms in Goldsithney.

The heavens opened while we tucked into our roast dinners, but by the time we left the sun was shining again! The next stage took us past Lands End and along the north coast to our afternoon tea stop.

Finally, we were guided back towards our accommodation as the local members gradually peeled off from the convoy. Thanks to Sandra and David Carne who arranged the day for us and to the other local members who helped with the route.

That just left Monday for the return journey, with most of us opting to spend some time crossing Dartmoor on the way.
